Smoothing out Natural Stone Tiles

Many floors are made of stone even if advance technologies have produced rubber or glass tiles. That is because tiles made from natural stones are tough and beautiful. The greatest concern with floor tiles is that they have uneven thicknesses. Several remedies can be done to fix this shortcoming. For example, granite or marble sides are sawn on both sides so that they are uniform in length and in width. Then they are polished or finished on the side facing up so the pieces will have a uniform thickness. Other types such as slate are split on the side facing up. Using this technique, the variations of thickness are reduced from one tile to another. This is further remedied by adjusting the amount of mortar underneath each tile. Minor variations are also fixed by utilising wide grout lines that ramp out the different levels of thicknesses or by using a cold chisel to shave off the tiles’ high spots. Sanding eliminates minute high points. Finally, low spots can be raised by using fillers that are similar to the colour of the tiles.
